The very idea that we *have* a "Loyalty Day", never mind W proclaiming it, gives me a vaguely queasy feeling.

But then, lots of things about this administration inspire that reaction in me.

And by the way, the sitting president, whoever it might be, is requested by said statute to:

(c) Proclamation.— The President is requested to issue a proclamation—
(1) calling on United States Government officials to display the flag of the United States on all Government buildings on Loyalty Day; and
(2) inviting the people of the United States to observe Loyalty Day with appropriate ceremonies in schools and other suitable places.

It was originally established in 1958 under President Eisenhower by the enactment (by congress) of 36 U.S.C. § 115.
