Possibly for reasons similar to why the trans-Atlantic crossing called for swimming? They wanted something human-powered?

I was only thinking that the traveller could use a bit of luxury at some stage during their journey. Ah well. I don't suppose they make luxury kayaks!

A while ago (last year?), you could get instructions for getting from US locations to European locations that included 'get to the end of a specific pier in Boston and swim across the Atlantic' - I've forgotten if the end point was in England or northern France, but it was somewhere along the English Channel.
