It was another expensive day

The brakes had been making a noise that I associate with 'the wear bars have gotten exposed'. Also, there had been an increase in road noise since the trip to gryphons_lair's for her birthday. So, iraunink took the car in to our mechanic today.

It needed:

• brake pads and rotors all around


• new wheel bearings (which are hub assemblies)


• rotate tires


• align tires front and back


• new serpentine belt


• new fluids

We knew the serpentine belt was coming - at the last oil change, we were told it was showing significant wear. The brakes were ... worse than I expected. The bearings, etc.? OK, I can see how the road noise came from that - but I was expecting quite that big a problem. All told, it was about $2k of car work.

Eek.

When I joke that I sold my house and got my car fixed? I wasn't kidding. I wound with a new timing belt and water pump in exactly this sort of awful sudden way.....

Yikes! But better expensively fixed brakes than no brakes at all, yes?

Oh, definitely! From past experience, I'd bet the brakes were less than half of the total cost - replacing either two or four hub assemblies was certainly the big chunk of the total. I would be surprised to find out that we got some kind of labor break on one of the two jobs because they were both happening at once.
