Update: fireopal.org is still down

I have a functioning Apache2. Now all I need to do is get my data into it.

exim is running - but I don't think mail is getting in to me yet. (ETA: Duh. It helps to restart the service after updating the config files.) E-mail is working.

sshd is working - I can ssh from my WinXP box to the server

I can't tell if mailman is working - ask me again after I know exim is working. I do know that I'm going to have to reconfigure some stuff, and recreate all my lists. :-( Liad and Liaden Universe News are first on the list.

Oh - I haven't installed a webmail client yet.

On the good new front - 500GB of /home, 120GB of /, and I'm going to moving spool to a dedicated 19GB partition at some point in the future. I hope to just move mail and print spooling.

Update: fireopal.org still down

I've just given up. I'm off to MicroCenter for a new big hard-drive - the current plan is get that installed, copy a bunch of data to it, and re-build from scratch. I hope to have a running system with Exim, Mailman, mutt and a web-mail client working before I go to bed tonight.

I think what happened is that my dist-upgrade decided to install X - which I don't use, and there was no room for. :-(

PSA: fireopal.org is down

That was unpleasant.

In mid-upgrade, the disk space in use was slowly going down, and then it leapt up to 100%. And the upgrade died. And now the system is unbootable. I think there's file system corruption problem.

I'm currently downloading a Debian Live Rescue CD ISO. It's got an hour plus to go - since it's 8:25 my time, and I'm already feeling tired, I'm afraid I'm not going to be working on it any more tonight. I'll burn the ISO when I get up tomorrow, and deal with it then.

PSA: Server work at fireopal.org

I'm going to be upgrading my server from Debian Etch (4.0) to Debian Lenny (5.0) over the next two days.

This involves at least one (but probably only one) system reboot - I got a new kernel as part of this.

If you see any problems, first try e-mailing me directly at sraun@fireopal.org. If that bounces, try fyreopal@gmail.com - I don't check the G-Mail account with any regularity, but I'll try to do so between now and Sunday evening.

For anyone who's a fan of Niven's Kzinti AND Lolcats

Baen Books is having a LolKzin contest. Make a LolKzin out of the cover image for one of their Man-Kzin books, and win a print.

The editors of Baen Books will be the judges. Entries will be judged on originality, sophisticated word play (yes, we mean puns) and overall fun factor.
Winner will receive a Man-Kzin print autographed by the artist, Stephen Hickman. The creator of the bestselling Man-Kzin Wars series, Larry Niven, disclaims any responsibility for this contest.

Girl Scout Cookies

For those of you who are local (Twin Cities, MN) and not reading [livejournal.com profile] pegkerr's LJ, her daughter Delia is selling Girl Scout cookies. The troop is trying to raise money for a trip to Washington, DC. Orders accepted there through 12N on 4 Feb.

PSA - Pterry's Hogfather Broadcast

Unfortunately, this is probably only going to be of interest if you read it within the next two hours, and you live in the US! Well, you might have longer if you live on the West Coast.

ION is showing the BBC production of Terry Pratchett's Hogfather tonight, 25 November, from 6:00-10:00pm CST. I'm told it's four hours starting at 7pm for EST. I don't know what it'll be for other time zones.

For those of you who live in the Twin Cities, MN area, [livejournal.com profile] iraunink informs me it's being broadcast on Channel 41.

(no subject)

Gakked from [livejournal.com profile] the_blue_fenix & my daily paper:

(the following is USAn-specific. If you do not live in the US or do not have a telephone, please ignore this.)

The Do Not Call List aimed at US telemarketers is getting close to five years old now. That means that if you registered at the beginning of the program, your DNC status may have expired or may be about to expire. Re-register now, it's free. Tell your friends. Register the phone numbers of elderly relatives who may not be able to cope with the Net themselves but who are prime targets of this kind of scum.

This site also tells how to place a complaint if you get tagged anyway.

Youtube request

Folks, when you do a Youtube embed, would you please include a straight URL pointer? About 20% of the time, an embedded youtube falls over and doesn't do anything I click "play". Yet, if I can find a straight pointer to it, I can go to Youtube and it plays just fine.

Also, when I'm reading text-only (which I do about half the time), it's a pain to go find the [EMBED] later and follow them - I'm much more likely to e-mail myself a URL pointing at youtube than a URL pointing to a post with an embedded youtube item. The failure rate is too high for it to be worth the effort.
