Wednesday's word is...

...camphoric.

1. pertaining to or derived from camphor.

That's not helpful because I don't know that I know and/or remember what camphor is like. This was one of my prompts in my last Yahtzee roll. I was mainly interested in how it's used. And I discovered it is mainly perfume descriptions:

As soon as I sprayed it on I felt the presence of the original, in the heavy, bitter almond opening standing in for that famous camphoric tuberose-anise-incense blast.

Facing Down the Beast: Dior Hypnotic Poison, Marina Geigert, 2009

Narcissus is here, but it's the earthy, almost camphoric kind, not the sweeter type.

Lisa and I went to Reno today for several errands that were of increasing urgency, as time is running short. While Lisa is not going to Westercon, she will be leaving on a trip for two months for which she leaves on the Wednesday after I get back from Westercon/Baycon on Monday the 7th. I hope we don't have to make any more Reno trips and that the next time I see Reno it will be on the morning of July 3 as I'm driving to Santa Clara.

We did get the things for which we were seeking: a new band for Lisa's watch (the old band broke), some additional socks for both of us as many of our socks were worn out, and a bit of material for Lisa to repair something. Fortunately, there is a good independent fabric store (Mill End Fabrics) that is not going the way of Jo-Ann or other fabric store chains.

Currently reading Finding Hester by Erin Edwards, about the making of the musical Operation Mincemeat, the group of fans whose crowdsourced research discovered that the MI5 secretary identified as Hester Leggett in Ben Macintyre's nonfiction account of Operation Mincemeat (and subsequent adaptations, including the musical) was actually named Hester Leggatt, and her life story that they uncovered, as well as biographical details about the other real-life figures featured in the musical. (In one particularly charming note: Ewen Montagu's descendants are fans of the musical, with one of them actually participating in the fan Discord that hosted the #FindHester research efforts.) This is a love letter to online fandom at its best - finding people to collaborate with on a passion project - and to archival research, and a delightful tribute to one of history's proverbial forgotten well-behaved women.

Made some progress in Caroline Fraser's Murderland, which continues to be less focused on serial killers of the 1970s Pacific Northwest than I had expected; instead, the most recent chapter I finished touched on Dune (which I've also been neglecting), the Vietnam War, and Fraser's childhood daydreams about killing her abusive father. So, yeah, still pretty grim and intense.

I was traveling again for much of last week which meant, again, it was time to work through an emergency paperback to see if it was discardable. And, indeed, it was! And you would think that reading and discarding one bad book on my travels, dayenu, would have been enough -- but then my friend brought me to books4free, where I could not resist the temptation to pick up another emergency gothic. And, lo and behold, this book turned out to be even worse, and was discarded before the trip was out!

The two books were not even much alike, but I'm going to write them up together anyway because a.) I read them in such proximity and b.) though I did not like either of them, neither quite reached the over-the-top delights of joyous badness that would demand a solo post.

The first -- and this one I'd been hanging onto for some years after finding it in a used bookstore in San Francisco -- was Esbae: A Winter's Tale (published 1981), a college-campus urban fantasy in which (as the Wikipedia summary succinctly says) a college student named Chuck summons Asmodeus to help him pass his exams. However, Chuck is an Asshole Popular Boy who Hates Books and is Afraid of the Library, so he enlists a Clumsy, Intellectual, Unconventional Classmate with Unfashionable Long Red Locks named Sophie to help him with his project. Sophie is, of course, the heroine of the book, and Moreover!! she is chosen by the titular Esbae, a shapechanging magical creature who's been kicked out into the human realm to act as a magical servant until and unless he helps with the performance of a Great and Heroic Deed, to be his potentially heroic master.

Unfortunately after this happens Sophie doesn't actually do very much. The rest of the plot involves Chuck incompetently stalking Sophie to attempt to sacrifice her to Asmodeus, which Sophie barely notices because she's busy cheerfully entering into an affair with the history professor who taught them about Asmodeus to begin with.

In fact only thing of note that nerdy, clumsy Sophie really accomplishes during this section is to fly into a rage with Esbae when she finds out that Esbae has been secretly following her to protect her from Chuck and beat her unprotesting magical creature of pure goodness up?? to which is layered on the extra unfortunate layer that Esbae often takes the form of a small brown-skinned child that Sophie saw playing the Heroine's Clever Moorish Servant in an opera one time??? Sophie, who is justifiably horrified with herself about this, talks it over with her history professor and they decide that with great mastery comes great responsibility and that Sophie has to be a Good Master. Obviously this does not mean not having a magical servant who is completely within your power and obeys your every command, but probably does mean not taking advantage of the situation to beat the servant up even if you're really mad. And we all move on! Much to unpack there, none of which ever will be.

Anyway. Occult shenanigans happen at a big campus party, Esbae Accomplishes A Heroic Deed, Sophie and her history professor live happily ever after. It's 1981. This book was nominated for a Locus Award, which certainly does put things in perspective.

The second book, the free bookstore pickup, was Ronald Scott Thorn's The Twin Serpents (1965) which begins with a brilliant plastic surgeon! tragically dead! with a tragically dead wife!! FOLLOWED BY: the discovery of a mysterious stranger on a Greek island who claims to know nothing about the brilliant plastic surgeon ....

stop! rewind! You might be wondering how we got here! Well, the brilliant plastic surgeon (mid-forties) had a Cold and Shallow but Terribly Beautiful twenty-three-year-old aristocratic wife, and she had a twin brother who was not only a corrupt and debauched and spendthrift aristocrat AND not only psychologically twisted as a result of his physical disability (leg problems) BUT of course mildly incestuous with his twin sister as well and PROBABLY the cause of her inexplicable, unnatural distaste for the idea of having children. I trust this gives you a sense of the vibe.

However, honestly the biggest disappointment is that for a book that contains incestuous twins, face-changing surgery [self-performed!!], secret identities, secret abortions, a secret disease of the hands, last-minute live-saving operations and semi-accidental murder, it's ... kind of boring ..... a solid 60% of the book is the brilliant plastic surgeon and his wife having the same unpleasant marital disputes in which the book clearly wants me to be on his side and I am really emphatically absolutely not. spoilers )

Both these books have now been released back into the wild; I hope they find their way to someone who appreciates them. I did also read a couple of good books on my trip but those will, eventually, get their own post.

I took this picture in the night last night during a sleepless spell. This is how I want to work for a while - just paint something kind of random on 3 or 4 different pages, let them dry and then paint a little more on them in spurts. Work in layers. Have fun with abstract doodle type art.

Didn't go to volunteer today. I've been feeling crappy with whatever this is that I have, plus Dave was using the truck today so I couldn't get to the hospital anyway. I spent a lot of the day resting. Dave went to Chloe and Mike's old house and helped Mike finish clearing stuff out. It is DONE now.

Flower. I finished it while sitting at the picnic table down at the creek this evening.

So hot today. I was talking to Johnny this afternoon and it was 100F there in West Reading. High 80s here but it's so humid it's awful. Hm, I just looked up West Reading and that's where Taylor Swift was born. Ha.

Making Memories and "Mean Girls"

I'm honestly feeling kind of overwhelmed today. My ADHD seems to be getting to me recently, but thankfully my therapist referred me to a psychiatrist recently to get officially diagnosed/medicated! Anyways, today is the first time in I don't know how long that I haven't had to go anywhere, so I've tried to kind of cram a lot of stuff into today. I took my last notes for my on-line bio class (YIPPEE!!!) and now I just have a few assignments to do tomorrow and a test to do Friday! I'm very excited to be done with it. :D I can only think how much time it'll open up for me for the rest of the summer to have more fun and relax more! Because really, I just need time to freaking relax. I guess I had some between getting back from Korea and starting back at work, but I'd like a little more old-fashioned summer days. I mean, that sounds a little "get off my lawn", but what I mean is sitting around, playing Splatoon or Minecraft, watching YouTube, watching TV. No obligations, just fun! I'm going to try and make some memories like that this summer. :)

And a pro of being a teacher just occurred to me--I'll still get the summer off! So I can keep doing fun stuff like that. :D Although it'll be harder to do stuff with my non-teacher friends during the weekdays. I'll try my best though!

Some highlights of the last few days: yesterday, Blue, Green and Green's little sister came over and we watched Mean Girls! I'd never seen it before and I understand now why it's so iconic. I'll write a mini-review of it on my site's Opinions page soon, so stay tuned for that!

Monday, I got to go to the lovely DMV (whilst quite hangry as well) to renew my permit. That's right, I somehow managed to make it to age 19 without a driver's license! Although I'm definitively saying that I definitely will have one by the end of the summer!! But my dad was, until recently, the only one who was willing to teach me to drive, and considering that five days of the week he's working long hours and Saturdays he helps my grandma out, I didn't really have any time to learn except for Sundays. Very annoying!

Recently, I've been watching two new shows: Boys Over Flowers, a K-drama from 2009 about this lower-class girl who gets a scholarship to an elite private school and K-drama drama ensues. It's really good and kind of addictive as well! I've also been watching Superstore, which is basically if The Office took place in a Wal-Mart or similar. Since I work in a grocery store myself, I find it really funny and at least somewhat relatable.

Next up in my Perpetual Journey Of Decluttering: in the limbo between my semester ending and my trip to Korea, I seem to have lost A) my nice electric toothbrush and B) my fancy expensive Korean skincare products I bought from my hair lady (who I need to see soon also, since my bangs are getting so long they're starting to bug me). In all the unpacking I did after getting home, I didn't find them, so I guess they must have been in one of the bags I unpacked beforehand? I have no clue. Anyways, I'm going to deep-clean my closet this Saturday in hope of finding them, and also because there's so much crap in there and I need to get rid of some of it.

And that's about it! Have any of y'all seen either of those series, or does anyone have any TV recommendations and/or decluttering advice or anything? Toodles!

Returned from the optometrist's, I have nocturnal eyes and mirrorshades. I feel I really should have seen this video coming.

Water use

The average water consumption for people in the UK needs to come down as hotter summers increase the chance of drought.

"The EA said customers in England need to cut their water use by 2.5 billion litres a day by 2055 – down from an average of around 140 litres per person per day to 110 litres per day. "

I looked at our previous water bills.  In summer, we use around 150L and in winter, significantly than that, but that's the total usage for three adults and  a child who is with us for two days a week.

Which makes our individual water usage just under a third of the national average, and already within the target by a good margin.  And that includes some water for topping up the pond and watering some of the plants.

We're on a water meter and pay about £170 per year for the household.

We've become very good over the years, at not using a lot of water.

LAUNDRY

A lot of people wear an item once, and automatically chuck it in the laundry (I was completely unaware of this until a woman told me that she washed her teenage son's jeans every day)

Me?  If it isn't visibly dirty, and it doesn't smell when I sniff under the armpits, then it's back in the wardrobe, or wear for another day.

If you're selective in the fabrics you buy, you can dramatically reduce the need for laundry.

Linen is amazing.  It really doesn't pick up body smells at all - that's because it naturally wicks moisture away from the body, in a way that synthetic fabrics can't.

I found this out while doing my English Civil War Reenactment.  The bottom layer of clothing for women is always a linen smock.  So, I made a linen smock.  I washed it once, to soften the fabric a little, then -having been told that it softened very nicely with wear, started to wear it as a nightie.  The most comfortable night garment I've ever worn.  I kept on wearing it, every night, waiting for it to get smelly.  It didn't. And the fabric now has a wonderful feel when you touch it (probably something to do with the natural oil in flax, but I don't know for sure)

Whereas if I wear something polyester based, it's often just one day's wear.

Cotton is very good as well - not quite so good as linen, but I can wear a cotton t-shirt as an under-layer and get quite a few days out of that before fails the sniff test.

What do you do to reduce your water consumption?

The His Majesty the Worm Bundle presents His Majesty the Worm, a megadungeon-crawling fantasy roleplaying game from Josh McCrowell at Rise Up Comus, plus other material including a "cozy halfling-village game" Under Hill, By Water and its travel expansion Walking Holiday, which might possibly draw some inspiration from a well-known fantasy author.

https://bundleofholding.com/presents/HisMajesty

Unfortunately I've received this on a day when I'm feeling seriously tired. I've taken a look and it seems to be well-presented and reasonably coherent, but the rule book alone  is more than 400 pages and I am not going to be able to give it more than a cursory look any time soon, and a game that starts out by wanting me to buy some tarot cards to play it does not automatically get my seal of approval - I suppose the cards aren't much more expensive than a few dice at current prices, but if I bought this, intended to run it immediately, then discovered I needed cards I didn't have I'd be a little peeved.

The halfling book is mostly about trying NOT to have adventures and firmly avoiding the sort of stress that comes with strange parties of dwarves and wizards on your doorstep, and looks to be a lot of fun. The supplement is about halflings that commit the serious mistake of going out to explore beyond their village, and how to create the surrounding area and have horrible things happen there, like running short of food. Seriously, go home and smoke some pipeweed instead, at least that stuff takes a few years to kill you...

Overall this looks to be reasonable value - I suspect that if I ever wanted to run a fantasy RPG I'd be more likely to go with the halflings than the Worm, but if either appeals it's probably worth a look.
