sraun: Mac's puppies piled up and sleeping (puppy pile)
Have those of you on my FL who are Legos fans seen that there's going to a Back to the Future set?

Yeah, I know - it's a silly subject. But it's a serious question.

I recently got a Kindle. I've been trying to decide if I want the Amazon Deluxe Case with Built-In LED Light, or something cheaper. And I've been thinking about my reading habits. I haven't read by anything other than ambient light since I was in elementary school, reading by flashlight under the covers when I was supposed to be sleeping.

My options:
1) Get the fancy Amazon cover - pros: all in one, only one thing to carry; cons: all in one, more expensive, heavier
2) Get a plainer cover and an external light - pros: possibly cheaper, possibly lighter; cons: adds another thing to my 'carry around' pile
3) Get a plainer cover: pros: probably cheaper, probably lighter, only one thing to carry, can upgrade to option 2 at my convenience; cons: can't read in the dark

So, here's the question: if you own an eInk-based ereader - Kindle, non-color Nook, some Sony devices - how often do you read on it using a booklight or other light source that just illuminates the device? Is this more or less frequently than you read dead tree books by booklight or similar illumination?

If you have an opinion - regardless of whether or not you own a relevant ereader - which of my options would you go for, and why?

ETA: FYI, part of what's going on here is I'm trying to convince myself that I'd actually find the light useful. So I'm likely to be poking fairly hard at some of the 'yes' entries, to try to figure out if they really apply to me.

I don't want an iPod.

What's your favorite non-iPod 'holds all my music' MP3 player? My library is currently 40GB, I'd like a minimum of 60GB and would really like 100GB+. I'll take Flash or Hard-drive. My budget looks like it could be as high as $500.

My Nokia 810 showed up this afternoon! It is now charged - I'll be putting a memory card in it and playing with it a little shortly.

At least, I'm guessing 'virtual' is a good adjective for ordered, waiting for delivery.

Today I got to order a Nokia N810 Internet Tablet with a 4GB miniSDHC card and USB card-reader. The Nokia itself could arrive as early as next Friday (the 8th) and as late as the following Friday (the 15th). The card-reader shipped today, I'm guessing the card will ship Monday or Tuesday.

Needless to say, I'm waiting with great anticipation!

It does look like the elder step-daughter no longer considers me the source of all evil. I am ... relieved.

Today is the kind of day where I wish I lived a house with a cathedral ceiling wall of windows (at least triple-pane, of course!) with a huge fieldstone fireplace in the center. So I could sit and watch the wonderful blowing snow through the windows around the roaring fire.

I really do like winter.

Lets see, what else is there - last night was the family Christmas with [ profile] iraunink's family. [ profile] kosmickitten & [ profile] bernesemntdog hosted - it was her first turkey, she mixed recipes. Unfortunately, she took the temperature from the shorter cooking time recipe, and the time from the longer cooking time recipe, and didn't monitor the internal temperature closely enough. It was good, but a little dry. [ profile] iraunink & I got a Hogfather DVD! We're happy about that - I've been watching it over my shoulder at work today.

Speaking of work - 7-7 today and tomorrow (Christmas Eve), then 7AM-3PM on Christmas Day. Then four days off, followed by two weeks of 'work every day except Saturday' (except that I don't work New Year's Day). The days I wouldn't normally work, I'll be working 4 hour days to cover for my co-worker who's in Sri Lanka getting married - he's due back the 16th. Add in another OT day on the 18th, and I should be able to buy myself a Nokia N810 come early February.

As I noted in an earlier entry, CompUSA to Close All Stores (link to a Wall Street Journal preview)

I realized something this morning - they're the one brick&mortar store that reliably carried the Nokia Internet Tablets. Which leads to the possibility of taking advantage of their misfortune to get the new toy I want. Anyone willing to be an agent picking up a Nokia N810 if their local CompUSA has them in stock and puts them on a significant discount (30% or better)? It's got a list price of $479, so it's possible I could save a nice chunk of change.

Given my experience with them in late 2002, it couldn't happen to a nicer company.

I just got my Nokia 770 Internet Tablet. 8.1 ounces, 5.5 inches x 3.1 inches x 0.70 inch, 800x480 touch screen with up to 65,536 colors, running a Linux-derived OS. Now I'll have to figure out how to make it jump through hoops - said hoops to include getting an SSH client running on it, getting more RS-MMC cards, another wallwart, and maybe an additional battery. Oh, and figure out how to access the the contents of the RS-MMC cards.

This is probably going to keep me busy for a while. Fortunately, the overtime that let me buy it is finishing up the end of August, so I should have a handle on it by the end of the first full week in September.

[ profile] dd_b came over today and took (what I assume will be) good pictures of my [ profile] jonsinger bowls. I'll post pictures when I get copies.

Thanks to this post from [ profile] khavrinen, I found out about this deal at Target. 512MB SD Card + MP3 Player for $39.88 + tax. I went and got one over lunch today, and am very happy. (The deal is good through 20 February, according to the tag at the store.)

I wanted an inexpensive MP3 player that would be good for wearing while I use my rowing machine. Looks like it's going to fit the bill wonderfully!
