New Year Book Meme, from [personal profile] trobadora via [personal profile] brithistorian:

  1. Grab the nearest book.

  2. Turn to page 126

  3. The 6th full sentence is your life in 2026.

From Liaden Universe Companion 2, the sentence is in the middle of a conversation, and is one word.

"Gold?"

That is such an interesting prediction / comment on 2026, since I'm planning on retiring at the end of the year.

"The city of Falerii in the Ager Faliscus some 50 km. north of Rome flourished from the sixth century to the third, when it was destroyed by the Romans in 241 B.C."

That was actually lucky. If I'd had books stacked in a different order I would have picked up a book with page 126 having only part of a single long sentence. (Ducks, Newburyport. The actual closest book was How to Kill a Dragon (Calvert Watkins)).

From The Foods and Wines of Spain, by Penelope Casas, in a recipe for garlic soup:

"Each day she goes to market, decides what is best, and then determines what will be offered that evening."

I hope I get a better kitchen for this, that's what.

I grabbed Charles Murray’s Taking Religion Seriously , and found: “Death by crucifixion was not just a gruesome and painful death for Jesus but a humiliation for everyone associated with him.”

"Nana sat at Mrs. Hudson's feet, gazing at Watson in mute appeal, her sad eyes pleading for useful work."

From The adventures of Mary Darling by Pat Murphy. Yes, that's Dr Watson (Doyle) and Nana the dog (Barrie).

So, I'm a giant dog who wants to be useful, or I'm a doctor veteran who's about to give in to a sad-eyed, dog-shaped horse?

"To look further back into the past, scientists need radioactive isotopes that decay more slowly"

(The Elements, A Very Short Introduction Oxford Press)

The actual closest book is a book of knitting patterns, and p126 is a picture of a finished hat and mitten set, which is not terribly useful here.

(congratulations on your impending retirement!)
