Chela, the old lady (see pictures here - I really need to update that page), is ill once more.

Saturday evening we came home and she had a wheezing cough. We thought about it, and observed her - she'd got an hour or two then cough some more, but did not seem to be in any significant distress. So, we went to bed, with intent to pay more attention to it Sunday. Sunday we realized that it was only/mostly happening when she was trying to bark - if she tried long enough, she'd get a real bark out, but otherwise it was just this wheezing cough. Hmmm, we dither.

Monday morning I call the animal hospital - the nurse says "Hmm" and decides to have a vet call me back. Vet calls back about noon, we discuss, I make an appointment for Chela at the Animal Hospital at 7:30 Monday evening.

I get home, Irene takes Chela to the vet while I'm gaming. (Yes, I was terribly cruel - but she'd already said I could do this!)

They get home shortly before 9:00 - Chela had x-rays which ruled out fluid in the lungs (similar to pneumonia), a tumor pressing against the trachea, and the trachea collapsing for other reasons. Oh - this is after a visual examination that came up with nothing conclusive.

Diagnosis? Asthma. My dog has asthma. She is, once again, on steroids. For about 18 days. This is at least the second time - she was on them when she wrenched her back four or five years ago.

Everything else the x-rays showed was in good shape. Whatever else my puppy-mill mom may have done, she passed on some really hardy genes!
