Fiction reading has slowed down immensely since I got married and employed. I used to read 5-10 books per week, and I'm down to one every two weeks to two in a week. I kind of miss it sometimes.
However, I just finished The Fairy Godmother by Mercedes Lackey, and it was much fun! And the heroine is much less abused as a child than most.
It takes place in the 500 Kingdoms, a place controlled by The Tradition. The Tradition is an impersonal magical force that wants all the fairy tale endings to take place. Be they good endings or bad, The Tradition doesn't care. Ella had the misfortune to be the title character in a Cinderella house-hold, but her prince never came by. So, she got recruited to be a Fairy Godmother. Fairy Godmothers are among the major players - their job is to help make the traditional endings come out. However, some (many? most?) of them don't like the nasty endings, so they try to manipulate events to make them come out to be the good endings. Our Heroine is one of that type.
It has some very amusing takes on how the fairy tale endings come about. Oh, and it's from Luna, an imprint of Harlequin - ( Spoilers )
I'm currently working my way through Cosmic Tales: Adventures in Sol System, edited by T.K.F. Weisskopf. It's neat - its got sensawonder.
