Weekend Update
May. 9th, 2005 03:48 pmOur standard Friday night date was pre-empted.
Irene did make it to plant sales on Friday - both the Friends School one and the U of M Horticulture Club. She got a set of four different heirloom tomatoes, a bunch of blue fescue, a bunch of marigolds, some salvia, and a miscellany of 'full to partial shade' stuff that looked interesting.
Joel Halpern, a friend of long-standing currently living outside Washington, D.C., came to town. He's got business meetings today and tomorrow, he flew in Friday and spent Friday, Saturday and Sunday night as our guest.
Irene picked him up at the airport shortly before 5PM on Friday, then the three of us went to Curran's for dinner. Don and Margo (WANOLJ) met us there - IIRC, we finished up about 7:30 or 8:00. Then it was off to a quick grocery run, then back to our house to let the dogs out, feed them dinner, etc.
Saturday was breakfast with Joel, then Irene and I ran out to the Minnesota Hosta Society's Hosta Sale at the Landscape Arboretum. My guess is that they'd gone through 30-50% of their stock in their first 20-30 minutes - the sale was supposed to be 12-4 Saturday and Sunday, I have extreme doubts about it actually running the full time! Came home with three not terribly uncommon hosta - one was an Elegens, big (like a foot or more across) blue leaves, four foot diameter, 2-2.5 feet tall. fmsv's, where laurel & kaustin announced their engagement. Played a player piano roll, had a lot of nice conversation, grilled a steak, didn't let it rest as long as I should have before I started cutting it - but Irene and Joel both approved, which is the important part!
Sunday was phone calls, visits and gaming.kosmickitten and Monica and Andrea all called. Andrea and Jacob and AJ came over for a while - AJ helped Irene plant some of Friday's loot. Don and Margo came over - they joined Joel & me for a game of Spacefarers of Catan, followed by bridge. Don, Joel and I were all very rusty at bridge! Ordered Chinese delivered for dinner. Realized I'd spaced out on laundry, got the one load in that had to be done - it was actually clean and dry by 10PM. Yay! Called my mother and step-mother - didn't actually get to talk to step-mother, she was talking to one of her daughters on another line - dad passed along my well-wishes.
Dropped off Joel at a car rental place on my way to work - that's the last I'll see of him this trip. Hopefully he'll make it back sometime soon! And maybe even get to bring his wife and kid with him next time!
