A busy afternoon
Jul. 6th, 2004 08:46 pmWe put Chela to sleep shortly after 5PM today.
She had a growth on her stomach (right under a nipple, actually) that was growing bigger & bigger. And she developed a similar growth on the inside of her lower lip, that was making her look like her lip was always curled way down. Add a hacking cough that may have been due to congestive heart failure, and hair falling out which were an indication of some kind of metabolic imbalance, and the fact that she was having to eat more and more food to keep her weight constant - we decided it was time.
She will be missed.

Date: 2004-07-06 07:37 pm (UTC)We're facing similar issues with my cat Pixel. He's 15. He's gone from 10 lbs at his top weight, to something between 5 and 6 at last check most of a year ago. He had to have most of his teeth removed. He has a problem with his eyes - we thought at first there was an infection, and then thought he had a tear duct blockage, but the vet back in CA finally figured out that he's lost so much weight in his face that the eyelids are curving in as the face shape changes, and the fur bits irritate his eyes, so he's got a constant eye discharge. I think he's going a bit deaf, possibly starting to be a bit senile. The vet in CA suspected kidney damage, and ideally I'd switch him to another food - but I was told the other cats couldn't live on just that, so to do that I'd have to isolate him permanently from the other cats, which would make his life miserable. I know at some point he's likely to get old and sick enough to get put down - but I don't know how to tell when. Not yet, I think.

Date: 2004-07-06 07:47 pm (UTC)Susan and I understand your loss, more than we'd ever care to, for making the decision to let a loved one go, even though their pain is great, is hard for those of us left behind. I hope you can find peace in that you know you did the vest thing for Chela. When we had to put our Shiela to sleep six years ago, we both cried, and then I had to go on a business trip the next day, and cried every night for days. May she be happy in fields of joy, waiting for you to show up so you can move on to the next life together.
My icon is of our current joy, Tegan, who followed Shiela by only a few weeks -- a completely different personality, but as much a joy.
