It's your basic wood steps nailed together. There were a bunch of nails that I've hammered down multiple times - this gets especially annoying when shoveling in the winter.
So, last week I picked up some stainless steel deck screws, and replaced a bunch of nails. I haven't used all of them - I expect I'll be replacing more in the future!

There is no excuse, in my opinion, for using nails anymore. When I had my bathroom redone I asked the guy I hired to use drywall screws instead of nails because I didn't want the nails to pop. He *insisted* that ring-shank nails wouldn't pop. Right.... Now I have a popped nail that will require surgical extraction from the drywall since it's popped just enough to show but not enough to grip.
