Got an interesting phone call from my mother (who lives in Duluth) last night. Seems that just before she called me, she'd gotten a collect call from the Hennepin County Jail. She refused charges - and then started wondering who it possibly could have been? So, she called me, just in case. We couldn't think of anyone else that would have called her collect - my brother lives in NY, the cousins in town would call their parents (who also live in town!) Maybe it was a wrong number?

More likely it's a prank. I got one like that once and accepted charges and got--well, abuse is the politest term for it. Jail is, apparently, very boring.

There was a story in the Tribune this morning which mentioned this practice: if an inmate can get the person called **at random** to punch in a certain code on the callee's phone, the inmate can call other people & charge the first person (such as your mother)'s phone for those calls.
