Saturday we heard the Minnesota Orchestra.

The Program:

Prelude to Hansel and Gretel, Engelbert Humperdinck
Classical Symphony, Opus 25 (Symphony No. 1), Sergei Prokofiev, II. Larghetto & III. Gavotte: Non troppo allegro
Symphony No. 2 in D major, Opus 73, Johannes Brahms, I. Allegro non Troppo
Symphony No. 1 in E minor, Opus 39, Jean Sibelius, IV. Finale (quasi una fantasia): Andante
Symphony No. 39 in E-flat major, K. 543, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, III. Menuetto: Allegretto
Adagio for Strings, Samuel Barber
Symphony No. 6 in B minor, Opus 74, Pathetique, Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky, III. Allegro molto vivace

And they had a build-your-own concert package, which we signed up for. Ended up with two tickets for each seven concerts, for $319.

I'm not even going to try to get the diacriticals in!

For reasons of paranoia, I'm not listing specific dates - the first three are in November, then one in January, and the last three are in May.

At the Movies with the Minnesota Orchestra!
What's your favorite movie music? Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, Pirates of the Caribbean? Vote for the music you want to hear and then see it performed by the world-acclaimed Minnesota Orchestra, along with selections from West Side Story, North by Northwest and Schindler's List. Plus, be the first to see a short film by local filmmakers - and the first to hear the film score. Visit our website by October 5 and participate in the "Kids' Choice" program to vote.

Brahms and Dvorak: Beginning of a Friendship
excerpts from:
Brahms: Hungarian Dances; Symphony No. 1; Variations on a Theme by Haydn
Dvorak: String Serenade; Wind Serenade; Slavonic Dances
Imagine you're the village butcher's son in your mid-30's, staying up late writing music and eking out a living as an organist in the local church. A famous composer plucks your composition from a pile of others - and one of the greatest musical friendships is born. Concert includes informal discussions and Q&A sessions about the music performed.

Doc's Minnesota Mix with the Minnesota Orchestra
Join legendary band leader Doc Severinsen and three exceptional, Minnesota-based artists - Cantus, Nachito Herrera and Bruce Henry - in a showcase of the state's finest musicians.

Beethoven's Ode to Joy
Beethoven: Choral Fantasy and Symphony No. 9, Choral
Helena Juntunen, soprano; Katarina Karneus, mezzo; Daniel Norman, tenor; Neal Davies, bass-baritone
Minnesota Chorale and Minnesota Orchestra, Osmo Vanska, conductor
Music that stands up to Old Man Winter! Beethoven's Choral Fantasy is a blazing piece that he wrote while warming up for his Ninth Symphony - and that one roars like a bonfire. Inspiration that will stay with you all the way into spring.

Vanska Conducts Mahler's Symphony No. 5
Shostakovich: Overture on Russian and Kirghiz Folk Themes
Goluov: Three Songs for Soprano and Orchestra (Dawn Upshaw, soprano)
Mahler: Symphony No. 5
Mahler's Fifth is one of the greatest musical adventures. The slow movement (the "Adagietto") is some of the most heart-breakingly beautiful music ever written. Hear it for yourself - and you'll also hear one of the most beautiful voices of today, Dawn Upshaw.

Vanska Conducts Sibelius
Adams: The Chairman Dances: Foxtrot for Orchestra, from Nixon in China
Aho: Flute Concerto (Sharon Bezaly, flute)
Sibelius: Symphony No. 1
Her flute is 24-karat gold and the European magazine Musica calls her "the greatest flutist of her generation". Sharon Bezaly will wow you with this new concerto of Kalevi Aho, whose Symphony No. 7 last year brought the Orchestra Hall audience roaring to its feet. Then, magic explodes when Osmo Vanska conducts the music of his fellow Finn, Sibelius.

Puccini's Tosca
Puccini: Tosca (complete opera in concert)
Deborah Voigt, soprano (Tosca); Carl Tanner, tenor (Cavaradossi); Greer Grimsley, baritone (Scarpia); Minnesota Chorale; Minnesota Boys Choir
The beautiful Tosca is unforgettable. She is Puccini's greatest opera heroine for whom he wrote the most voluptuous music of his life. No one today sings this grandest of grand opera characters better than Deborah Voigt. This is thrilling music, in full operatic glory, with a scandalous plot and a surprise climax the end the concert season with a bang!

I'm looking forward to this!

Also, Mannheim Steamroller is doing a concert in Minneapolis the end of November - I'm hoping to get to that. I'm also watching for the next Austin Lounge Lizards show - my experience is that they come up in November if they come. Nothing listed on their web site yet. :-(
