Good news, bad news
Jun. 9th, 2003 03:13 pmThe weekend went nicely - Saturday was a surprise birthday party for sister-in-law Monica, followed by a short stay at the Minn-StF Meeting.
For some reason, every time we visit that Monica, it POURS. Always makes for interesting driving - she lives about 15 miles north of 694 just off of Highway 65.
On Sunday, Irene went to the Ladies Sewing Circle & Terrorist Society Meeting. I dug up a bunch (six or seven?) of chicory plants from the yard - nasty hardy things. I put my OTC weed-killer on them, let them wilt, try and dig up as much of the root as I can get. I've been fighting with them since I moved in. I may or may not win before Irene renders the point moot - her long-term plan calls for 'no grass' in the backyard. I also got new hardware installed on my home Linux box - added 120GB of hard-drive, and a 52/24/52 CD-RW drive. The hardware install went smoothly, the BIOS recognized that both of the new drives were there. The hard-drive was still formatting when I went to bed last night - I'll have to check it when I get home this evening. Then I'm going to have to figure out what I have to do to get CD burning working on my Debian box - I assume I'm going to have to install some new software!
That was the good news - now for the bad news.
Then there's work - we're behind on cycling PC leases - have ~80 expired machines that we need to replace with new ones. It has been decided that we'll all be putting in overtime until we get caught up - on the order of five hours per week. This means that they're going to be adding significantly to my personal stress levels - I realized some time ago that visiting user's desks was the most stressful thing I was being required to do. I was very happy when we restructured the department and arranged things so that I didn't have to!
We are getting another person in my department - the req went out last Monday, it's almost certain to go to one of our former contractors - but it will probably take at least three weeks before he could start. I'm hoping for him by the beginning of July.
