There's a lot of truth there - I like to run mages. If there's no magic, I do psionics. If there's no psi, I do something that feels similar - one of my longer running characters started as a 15-year-old kid with a high genius IQ, eidetic memory, passion for reading, and who was physically a wimp. Combat? Run and hide! Something with computers or science? New toys!
