Make sure to follow the directions that say to push the batter to the outside edges, and be careful to grease and flour really well. A can of Baker's Joy (spray grease/flour combo) might really come in handy -- I intend to get some for the next time I use mine, though I didn't have a problem.
The Baker's Joy stuff worked really well. Chocolate chips, or other such things I'm sure, migrate downward, which means they end up at the turrets more than the base. Not necessarily bad, though. For frosting I recommend a glaze style frosting - I make one out of a few cups of powdered sugar, some vanilla for flavoring, a pinch of salt, and just enough milk to get it to the consistency I want - add a bit, stir, repeat. Then you drizzle it over the castle. Has a nice flavor, but not thick enough to obscure details.
I'm going to try filling the castle turrets with a spoon before pouring in the rest of the batter--I had a couple that had air pockets on the first try.
If you don't want to glaze it, a last-minute sprinkling of powdered sugar shows up the castle details and gives a snow effect. And the flags-on-tall-candles were a big hit among the 10 year olds. http://nlbarber.livejournal.com/80232.html
Wow, thanks for the pics, Nancy. I'm saving that for ideas, if I ever get around to getting that cake pan. Don't have much call to bake cakes these days, as all my family are hundreds of miles away, and hubby and I are trying to lose weight.
