I don't know.

I actually recognize quite a few of them, and can conceptualize how they got on the list. A big chunk of them are in my local fannish community, only they're 20 years younger and have very different interests. We have a lot of mutual friends who are also on LJ. Some of them a recognize by handle, because they've had posts that I've read when pointed to by people on my friends list, or because I've seen them posting in threads I'm posting in.

A big part of the uncertainty is due to how I use LJ. For me, it's another way to interact with and keep track of people that I've already gotten to know through other venues - it's not a primary meeting place. I don't think there's anyone on my friends list that I haven't either met in person, or knew before LJ via a targeted mailing list.

If someone friends me because of this meme, I'll go check them out, and possibly / probably friend them back.
