Hey, [livejournal.com profile] 17catherines! Would it be possible for you to get some knowledgeable commentary on the news story about diabetes that [livejournal.com profile] fajrdrako pointed to in this entry. It's about a link between pain receptors and diabetes.

I've had a look and posted it on to TheMadProfessor. Looks interesting to me, but it is early days yet... The link between insulin resistance and T1D has been known for a while. More importantly, I'm told that it is relatively easy to cure diabetes in mice - apparently, they've come up with a number of ways that sadly have no effect in humans, and from what I understand, this group have not yet moved on to any human trial. Definitely worth keeping an eye on, though, because of its implications for both kinds of diabetes, and because it sounds like it's an actual cure (our studies, though at the human clinical trial stage, are prevention rather than cure, and we can't yet find all the people in the general population who are likely to get T1D).
