Text Mode LJ?
Jan. 14th, 2007 08:28 amWell, THAT'S unpleasant.
Sometime between about 2PM on Wednesday and 7:30AM today, work decided
to block access to *.livejournal.com. I won't be reading LJ from work
any more, unless I can figure out how to tweak things to be able to
read it using lynx or links.

Date: 2007-01-14 03:39 pm (UTC)Another possibility, if you can install software on your machine, is to use xming (assuming you're running Windows) to export an x-window browser from whatever machine you'd have run links from. (This can be tunneled through ssh, so as long as you can ssh out, you can set up an X-session from the remote box to your local box).
Good luck!

Date: 2007-01-14 08:03 pm (UTC)Unfortunately, I've never gotten X working directly on any of my Linux servers - they've always had graphics cards that required proprietary closed drivers that I could never get working. I've got eXceed to install a Windows box and try sometime - it's one of those things that I need a Round Tuit.
Regardless, it's not really an option from my work box - it's a rather locked down WinXP box that I don't have software install rights on.

Date: 2007-01-14 05:41 pm (UTC)Yeah, it's been blocked where I work for months. Even more annoying, my two personal e-mail accounts (not the services behind them; I can open the log-in page but when I log in the page is blocked) were blocked a couple of years ago.
I'm *so* glad I retire in 2.5 months...

Date: 2007-01-14 07:17 pm (UTC)Of course I only get online at coffee break or over lunch, but the hospital's wireless network only blocks a few websites. (Unfortunately one of them is the political site I happen to webmaster.)

Date: 2007-01-14 08:02 pm (UTC)As
johnridley says happened to him, my work blocked it for a day or two and then relented. I think it happened because for a while there we had a senior manager who was 1) a nutcase and 2) had too much time on their hands and who therefore spent lots of it worrying about things that really didn't matter, and/or things that did matter but in ways entirely beyond their ken. If you're friendly with your immediate manager you might want to inquire and mention that once one takes a minute or two to look at it, one will realize that LJ bears no real resemblance to the time- and resource-wasting and network traffic hogging MySpace (which I'll be most workplaces have blocked by now for those reasons as well as others). Good luck!
