My test showed #3 to be an alt.vine in the egg. Yes, it does matter from the very first image you see - it's just that the images are so close to each other that it can be hard to tell the difference unless you either see two different ones side-by-side, or have a phenomenal color memory. I don't have the latter, I actually have a fairly poor color discrimination - so I trust to programmatic tests. http://www.rosesagae.com/Other/Dragcave/dragonguide.php has images of all the dragons at all four stages.
What's amusing is that there are apparently two alt.blacks - she's got three sets of black hatchling images, and now that I think about it I've seen all of them. I wonder what the third set grows up to be? And I wonder if they'll find a third egg variant for it?
