has lived with someone who worked graveyard, or knows someone, or even just has an opinion.

I started working a graveyard shift yesterday (4 days a week, roughly 11pm-9am). I'm (trying to) go right home after work and get to sleep soon.

The schedule is looking like:

~6pm - get up
7-9pm - have the big meal of the day (usually made by me, then shared with the lovely [livejournal.com profile] iraunink
~11pm - go to work
~3am - have a medium sized meal
9am - leave work, get home, have a light meal, maybe a heavy snack, go to bed

What would you call the meals? I'm currently tending towards dinner, supper & breakfast.

I'd call them dinner, lunch, breakfast as to quasi-fit their times like you're doing.

my friend called the first meal he ate "breakfast" regardless of what it was or when he ate it.

I'm with your friend, for me the first meal of the sleep cycle I eat regardless of what it is or when I eat it is breakfast. Drives my wife crazy.

I go for calling them by the time of day...

When I worked graveyard, I called them dinner, lunch, breakfast. That was mostly because of the food they consisted of: the late evening meal was usually dinner or leftover-type food, the 3AM was something I'd packed, and the morning meal was usually a stop on the way home at the local hole-in-the-wall breakfast place.

I fall into the dinner, lunch, breakfast crowd as well - unless you want to call the middle meal and Extended Midnight Snack... :-)

A bit tricky, since I don't usually have a big meal soon after I get up, whenever that may be. Still, I agree about the large one. Given the topsy-turvy nature of your schedule, I'd be tempted to call them:

Dinner
Early Morning Tea
Fastbreak (or startfast)

But that's me.
