Anyone have a copy of the CD "Carillon of the Belfry of Ghent"? Amazon has 5 used copies, running from $78.99 to %149.95. Way too rich for my blood! There's one track that I really want - "18. The Flight of the Bumble Bee, musical picture for orchestra (from The Tale of Tsar Saltan)" - that's a whole 1:51 long. It is, I admit, a good bet I'd enjoy other tracks.

Date: 2011-02-19 01:29 pm (UTC)The Tale of Tsar Saltan as an opera is very rarely performed in the US (although that piece is quite popular. In fact, after its debut in the first decade of the 1900s, the only other time it was performed in the US was in 1987 at Indiana University. Elaine and I had the pleasure(?) of seeing it.
It is the only time I've ever nearly fallen asleep at an opera. It was dull. It was also being stereo simulcast (in part because of its rarity). During "The Flight of the Bumblebee" a bee is flying around the stage. The announcer on the radio apparently had to explain "The reason you hear laughter is that there is a foot long bumblebee flying around the stage and dropping on the actors' heads when it is meant to sting them." A pantomime bumblebee would have worked better.
